Cruiseship Queen Mary II, 2002

In 2002 Broekman was commissioned to develop an artwork for the newly built Queen Mary 2. This transatlantic cruise liner, built by the international Cruise Company Cunard LTD, is the largest, longest, tallest and widest passenger ship ever conceived. With a length of 350 meters (1.132 feet) and a height of 72 meters (236.2 feet), the luxury cruise ship is able to accommodate 2.620 passengers. The total costs have been estimated at $800 million dollars.

For the 3-story Britannia Restaurant, Broekman designed a hand woven gobelin wall carpet of 6,4 x 4,5 meters (20 x 15 feet), featuring the Queen Mary 2 interwoven with the skyline of New York and the Brooklyn Bridge. The production was done in Poland. The project has been commissioned by art agency Enterprise and Art and realised in close corporation with the Swedish architects Tillberg Design. Due to strict security demands, the tapestry was executed in wool combined with Trevira CS on a Trevira CS background.
